The Nana Tech advertisement is about not forgetting; it’s about reliving the memories you want to stay with you forever.

The concept is a pair of digital glasses that can play back you memories. The user can enter a digital recreation of their favourite events which they can relive over and over. The targeted audience is the elderly, perhaps those whose memory is starting to slip. They would be easy to use, simply slipping on the glasses and letting them do the rest; perfect for those who are not technology minded.

The purpose of the advertisement is to show the function of the eye ware. It features the glasses showing nostalgic images from the 1950’s set to a feel good song by The Chords called Sa-boom (released in 1954.) This will appeal to people that lived in that era. It should reprise certain happy moments from the viewers own life, which they can then project into the product itself. The advertisement is to the point, a short demonstration of the glasses working followed by the company logo and slogan. This makes the ad effective as it is not cluttered with unnecessary information and not so long that it would lose the viewers attention.

Trying to decide between the more feminine and tribal design style, and having a look at what style has more of an impact with negative photography… I think tribal.

The Te Puni Kokiri House is the home to New Zealand’s Ministry of Maori Development. I think that it contains elements from the Art Deco design style from the Alternative Modernism era and the “best known local example of the new architecture becoming vogue in Europe” (Absolutely Positively Wellington). The building is somewhat fit to be the home of the Ministry of Maori Development as the building itself presents elements of development within its architectural structure and design. Initially, the building contains elements of the traditional Classical style, with the presence of columns and dark structural material to resemble limestone. The material of the second layer of the building was concrete, a new trending material of the time. These elements were made under the construction of the architects, William Henry Gummer and Charles Reginald Ford (founders of Gummer and Ford Architects) in 1940 and the building was initially known as the State Fire Insurance Building (New Zealand Historic Places Trust- Pouhere Taonga, 2012). The Ministry of Maori Development re-established the building in 1998-99 with a few, modernised renovations (with Athfield Architects Ltd) , including a more modernised structure and material at the summit of the building. During the time of Art Deco, transportation and movement become the fashion for of the people and so the allusion of movement was key feature of the design movement.  This is shown on the building with its wavy facade facing out onto the street corner, which today, is still a unique aspect of architecture. Abstract shapes and geometry was also a key feature of the movement, and as shown by the geometrically abstract structure at the summit of the building, it was one of the elements that make this building a strong example of the Art Deco style. This presence of development of the structure of the building is a literal visual example of the Art Deco concept where “designers borrowed characteristics from early cultures and combined them with modern technology. (Allwright, 1997), and so, by borrowing the characteristics of the ancient Hellenic culture, and combining them with characteristics of the Alternative Modernism design era, the building presents a strong sense of the acknowledgement of changing and developing times and despite the two contrasting design eras and materials, it is harmonious and aesthetically pleasing.

“A New Way of Seeing”

Media design influences public perspective and suggests a new way of seeing. I have decided to show this concept within my stop motion clip with reference to tattoos. Adolf Loos believed that tattoos were worn by criminals and the low class citizens (Ornament and Crime) and today, it is still a common stereotype within society. With my clip, I plan on inverting the photography of a model with tattoos, to offer a new perspective to what tattoos are. Searching through Google, I came across images with negative photography, and it was interesting to see the change of state using negative had upon the object. My favourite image (which has been uploaded in a previous blog) is of a negative photograph of a tree. With normal photography, we may just look over and past it as it is only a tree- nothing special, yet once inverted, we become more conscious of the tree, we look at it and not past it and see a pattern, an unique layout of the branches that we haven’t noticed before- We are given a new way of seeing, and can admire the beauty of the tree with a new perspective. I hope to be able to have this similar effect with my stop motion clip and offer a new perspective of tattoos, showing them as not simply a branding, but as an art. I want to be able to show that how media design portrays things (whether it be positive or negative) has an influence of how the viewer will continue to perceive it, even when they aren’t looking or interacting with the initial design.

The tacky looking brainstorm was my original.. But it was just a large jumble of scribbles and ideas that needed to be thrown onto paper immediately otherwise they would be lost again. I had a more nicer looking brainstorm as my final brainstorm, it was more filtered and deciphered the notes from the original, but it’s not wanting to upload.. I’ll solve this dilemma eventually, but until then, here’s a brainstorm.

On the hunt for some kind of inspiration. I was thinking of maybe using negatives to show a new perspective of images (hence; ‘a new way of seeing’).. Just an idea though and thought I should document these just in case I decide to go with it.

And again, a bit simple and using real people. Inverting the colors was a pretty cool way to get the message to stand out.

This is like 2d mixed with 3d stop motion animation. People staying vertical on the ground, and the ground altering behind them to show change and movement. Different to the other 2 stop motion videos, and also by Coldplay.
